After driving an hour north from Puerto Escondido we arrived to La Laguna de Chacahua. An enormous and mesmerizing lagoon full of wild life. We got dropped off at a little port and that's where our adventure began. We had to cross the lagoon until reaching where it met with the ocean and the town was located. On the journey to the town we saw beautiful plants and hundreds of bird species all hiding within the huge mangroves, fish popping their heads out of the water, frogs jumping from branch to branch and a calming stillness surrounded us. We arrived in a lively town with people, restaurants and cabinas all along the beach, and in the ocean we could see some perfect waves waves coming in, joy oh joy!
To get to the other side of the coast we needed to cross on small lanchas. We probably could have walked across but people say the lagoon is home to hundreds of crocodiles, and none of us were feeling too risky. There's a small light house you can hike up to on a dirt and rocky path, and once you reach the very top you have a breathtaking view of the lagoon, the ocean, the coast and the thick jungle surrounding it. This is truly a peaceful and untouched town. On one side of the lagoon you have the main arrival spot, where tourists stay near restaurants, lodging and music. On the other side there's a locals village, people walking down and up the street, kids playing outside and pigs, chickens and dogs all hanging out.
